What is an Orthodontic Exposure?

An orthodontic exposure is a surgical procedure performed to expose an impacted tooth that is unable to emerge naturally. This process is commonly needed for upper canine teeth, but it can also be necessary for other teeth. By exposing the impacted tooth, our team enables orthodontists to guide it into its correct position using braces or other orthodontic appliances.

Who Needs an Orthodontic Exposure?

Orthodontic exposures are typically recommended for patients who:

  • Have impacted teeth that are preventing natural eruption: Impacted canines and other teeth can disrupt the alignment of adjacent teeth.
  • Require orthodontic alignment of all teeth: For a complete and effective orthodontic treatment, impacted teeth often need to be exposed and guided into place.
  • Experience delayed tooth eruption: Some teeth may not erupt on time due to physical obstructions, crowding, or positioning issues in the jaw.

Our team will work closely with your orthodontist to ensure the procedure aligns with your overall treatment plan, helping achieve optimal alignment and aesthetics.

The Orthodontic Exposure Procedure

  1. Consultation and Planning: During your consultation, our team will use advanced imaging technology, including the i-CAT™ Cone Beam Scanner, to assess the impacted tooth’s position and develop a precise treatment plan.
  2. Preparation for the Procedure: We offer Anesthesia & IV Sedation options to ensure comfort and relaxation throughout the procedure.
  3. Surgical Exposure: A small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the impacted tooth. Depending on the orthodontist’s guidance, a bracket may be attached to the tooth to help guide its alignment. This bracket is then connected to orthodontic appliances, allowing the orthodontist to gradually pull the tooth into its proper place.

Recovery and Follow-Up: Post-surgery, our team provides detailed Surgical Instructions for optimal recovery. Most patients experience mild discomfort that can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Follow-up appointments ensure the area is healing properly and that the tooth is responding well to the orthodontic guidance.

Benefits of Orthodontic Exposures

Orthodontic exposures offer several key benefits:

  • Improved Smile and Alignment: Guiding impacted teeth into position supports a more complete and even smile, contributing to both aesthetics and functionality.
  • Enhanced Orthodontic Results: For patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, exposing and aligning impacted teeth ensures comprehensive results and long-term stability.

Prevention of Future Dental Issues: Properly aligned teeth help reduce the risk of decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues that can result from crowded or misaligned teeth.
